an extra special yarn

on a cold and wintry february day, in a bitty bookshop on the corner of mid-sized southern city street,

a crew of knitters from the local knitting shop came together with neighborhood children who wanted to gain some needle know-how...

and to help their city's only independent children's bookshop win a special contest:

February 4

boy are we keen to win this contest. wanna help? come by with your ideas (and your needles...)

but what to cover?  as their eyes took in the shape of the shop, their ideas unfurled much faster than their newbie knitting could match.  the table?  (ooh arty!  too big...)  the chairs?  (ooh cozy! too curvy...)  the shelves (really?)

wait...the bubbles (ooh clever!  just right...)

in this shop, these shelves hold bubbles which spell out where to look for the kind of books that they love.  they go to "interesting info" for their fact-y fix. or  "8 & up" for the newest brixton brothers. or "picturebooks" if they want their hat back.

but if the bubbles were covered (no, clothed!) in some caps and scarves and sweaters, they could shout out the section!

so the children dressed up some models with their own knitted bits...

and set their fingers to the task!

two hours later, they had created squares, or rectangles, or other (unidentifiable) shapes, but alas, none were quite big enough to cover the bubbles.

heavy sighs draped the room.  the shelf-talkers weren't going to talk after all.

this story is not going to have it's happy ending, they thought.

but savvy stewart, chief knitter, came up with an idea so clever it set the kids to smiling again.  after all, what apter thing to fashion than a bookmark!

contest aside, it was just a great day.  they learned something new (needles are fiddly), gained a new storybook heroine (annabelle, of course), and got to mark the memory by taking a bit of it home with them.

which makes this an extra special yarn.
